What is a Doula?
Doulas support in pregnancy, birth and in the postnatal period by providing information, advocacy, and offering practical and emotional support to the whole family - Doula UK
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a person before, during, and shortly after childbirth to help them achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.

Emotional Support
Doulas offer reassurance, encouragement, and a calming presence. They help manage stress and anxiety during pregnancy and childbirth.

Physical Support
They assist with comfort measures such as breathing techniques, relaxation methods, massage, and positioning to help alleviate pain and facilitate labor progress.
Informational Support
Doulas provide evidence-based information about pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period. They help expectant parents understand their options and make informed decisions.
Advocacy
They support the birthing person's preferences and help them communicate effectively with their healthcare team to ensure their wishes are respected.
Postpartum Support
Doulas also assist with postpartum care, including breastfeeding support, newborn care education, and helping the family adjust to the new addition.
Doulas are not medical professionals and do not perform clinical tasks such as cervical exams or fetal heart monitoring. Instead, they complement the medical team by focusing on the emotional and physical well-being of the birthing person. The support provided by doulas has been associated with a range of positive outcomes, including shorter labor, reduced need for pain relief medications, lower rates of cesarean sections, and improved maternal satisfaction with the birthing experience.
